This guide is coming soon. We are finalizing the definitive Steuer-ID guide for expats in Germany. It will cover everything from what the Steuer-Identifikationsnummer is, how to get it, Tax Class selection, and how to avoid the dreaded Tax Class 6 penalty.
What this guide will cover
Your Steuer-Identifikationsnummer (Tax ID) is an 11-digit number assigned to you for life when you first register in Germany. It's different from your Steuernummer (tax number). The Tax ID is needed by your employer to correctly calculate your income tax withholding. Our guide will include interactive tools to find your optimal tax class and calculate the Class 6 penalty you'd face without it.
Quick reference
The Tax ID is automatically mailed to your registered address within 2–4 weeks after your Anmeldung. If it hasn't arrived, you can request it from the Bundeszentralamt für Steuern (BZSt). For urgent cases, contact your local Finanzamt directly — they can sometimes provide it faster.
