What is a German Blocked Account (Sperrkonto)?

A Sperrkonto (blocked account) is a mandatory financial instrument for non-EU international students and job seekers applying for a German student or job-seeker visa. It proves to German authorities that you can financially support yourself during your stay — without relying on state assistance.

The account is "blocked" in the sense that you cannot withdraw the full amount at once. Once you arrive in Germany and activate the account, €992 is released monthly. You need a separate regular bank account (Girokonto) to receive these monthly transfers.

The 2026 required amount of €11,904 is calculated based on Germany's BAföG (Federal Training Assistance Act) living costs estimate for students. This amount is reviewed annually and has increased steadily: €853/month in 2020, €934/month in 2023, €992/month in 2025/2026.

⚠ Coracle Update (August 2025): Coracle has suspended new blocked account applications as of August 2025. We recommend Expatrio or Fintiba for new applications. Existing Coracle accounts continue to function normally.

Step-by-Step: How to Open a Blocked Account

The complete process from choosing a provider to activation in Germany takes approximately 2–4 weeks. Start at least 6–8 weeks before your visa appointment to leave buffer for delays.

1
Choose Your Provider
For most students: Expatrio (lowest fees, fastest, US citizens accepted, includes Girokonto). For students under 18 or needing DAK insurance: Fintiba.
Time required: 1 day
2
Create Account & Upload Documents
Register online, upload your passport (exactly as it appears — full name, middle names, correct spelling). Expatrio requires only passport. Fintiba may request additional enrollment documents.
Time required: 1–2 hours
3
Transfer €11,904 + Buffer
Transfer exactly €11,904 from your home bank. Add €100–200 buffer for transfer fees. Important: Use only approved transfer methods (SEPA, SWIFT via provider instructions). The name on transfer must exactly match your passport. Note: Kotak Mahindra (Indian bank) may not be accepted — check with your embassy.
Time required: 5–10 business days for international transfer
4
Receive Sperrbestätigung (Blocking Confirmation)
Once your transfer is verified, the provider issues an official Blocking Confirmation letter. This is the critical document for your visa appointment. Print on quality paper — bring original + 2 copies to your embassy interview.
Time required: 3–7 days after funds clear
5
Visa Interview
Present the Sperrbestätigung as part of your financial proof package. All German embassies worldwide accept Expatrio and Fintiba confirmation letters. Keep the document secure — without it, the visa application cannot proceed.
Within 2 weeks of receiving confirmation (typical)
6
Arrive in Germany & Activate Account
Within your first 14 days: complete Anmeldung (address registration at Bürgeramt). Then: send your Aufenthaltstitel (residence permit) copy to your provider online. Monthly €992 payments begin immediately after activation to your German Girokonto.
Must activate within first 90 days of arrival

Our Recommendation

For most students: Expatrio is the best value at €49 setup, fastest processing (3–5 days), and includes a free German Girokonto. Fintiba is better if you're under 18 or need DAK health insurance specifically.
